The Truth About Cyber Crimes And Online Scams

The Truth About Cyber Crimes And Online Scams

Cybercrime involves any fraudulent activity done or achieved with the use of the computer over the internet. It primarily refers to Internet-based activities aimed at deceiving other internet users or companies into spending money or any resource that would cost them but be of benefit to the individual who promoted such activity.
These would include the following:

  • Firewall Hacking
  • Phishing
  • Impersonation, etc.

Cybercrimes and Hacking

Over the years, the rate of criminal cyber activities has gradually increased with more understanding of the computer and the Internet. Young people mainly have been involved in these activities. This they do to be able to make money, seek recognition on the net, or sometimes, just to create relevance in the world of computer and communications.
The increasing burden of these activities has led to the development of better cybersecurity tools and surveillance systems. Web-based companies now develop well-encrypted data and information system with multiple security obstacles to be crossed. But in spite of these, there have been cases where even such strong firewalls have been breached.
In order to protect themselves, web-based companies seek to discover the security loopholes in the firewall and find ways to better encrypt their databases. Ethical hackers are computer programmers whose job is to ensure that the most sophisticated hacking methods or at least the available methods don't break through the company's system.

Another form of cybercrime that I want to point out is the "direct cybercrime". Unlike the more conventional form involving firewalls breaking, passwords hacking, and the likes, this category would include direct interaction with vulnerable persons or groups of persons with the intent of exploiting them monetarily or otherwise. This category most commonly involves "Online Dating Scams", "Online Businesses", and "Fake Transactions".

Online Dating Scams

It is no news that people get robbed of their money in the name of online dating and relationships. There are a handful of online dating sites out there where people check in to find a life partner.
More interestingly, common social media sites like facebook where two-way communication is possible also feature cases of relationship scam.
People become really susceptible when they get desperate for a relationship, marriage or just a sex partner. This category of susceptible individuals include the following:

1. Young females above the age of 30.
2. Older persons who have divorced or lost their partner and still desire to satisfy their sexual urge.
3. Wealthy singles who just want a companion in their life, especially being a woman.

Beautiful Ladies Ready For A Relationship

Relationship scammers most commonly come as males pretending to be interested females. They then go on to demand items of money and property from that victim husband-to-be.
For some reasons, many people have been victims this way. Their most important targets are those in the Americas where the currency value is relatively higher, I mean after conversion to their local currency.
In the end, the victim then discovers that the beautiful young lady is indeed a 'beautiful young man' that is only ready to get their money and disappear into thin air.

Another scenario may involve a young man promising to marry a 'desperate older woman'. This is also common amongst older white women who would want a man to settle down with irrespective of the race and skin colour.

Yahoo and G-Boys

Note that this is not in any way referring to '' or any of its services but rather a colloquial term referring to fraudulent activities over the internet. The term was popularised in places like Nigeria and is still been used till date.
The first time someone mentioned the term 'yahoo', I was made to understand that it refers to a group of people that were involved who would sit in front of their computers for long hours, days or even years making attempts to lure people into paying them some undeserving money.
They would eventually 'hit wealth' after this long time. But the exact procedure was never revealed by anyone especially when very few people knew about the processes.
Attention was on banks and other financial institutions and of course some few wealthy individuals. They forge certificates or other people's identity in order to be allowed access to the funds that belonged to these people. They may be caught in the process but the few that escaped being caught were never to be traced anymore. However, they lived a very extravagant lifestyle when they have made some huge cash. Their lifestyle reveals that they are proud of what they do and doesn't mind allowing the general public to notice it in them, especially when they do not have enough proof to indict them.
The so-called yahoo or G-boys may be involved in activities ranging from simple impersonation scams to relationship scams, phishing, and even to cyber-hacking. But for reasons that they have refused to engage in highly intellectual tasks outside cheating, relationship scams tend to be very common.

They would falsify documents, or create situations that may deceive the victims into believing that they are harmless or genuine at the expense of their victims' money or property.
"Phishing refers to the simulation of an otherwise genuine advertisement on the internet by creating graphics or texts representing a notable company without the knowledge and approval of that company".
This they do in order to extract vital information from the victim so that they can have access to their financial and/or physical assets. A good example will be a neatly created Facebook login page, where the user will try to log in, but with the result of sending their login details to the mastermind behind the plot.
By mimicking certain agents, they are able to convince people to transfer money, assets or properties to their account. One way by which they are able to achieve this is to promise their victims huge gains and based on their greediness, they simply see it as an opportunity that should be exploited effectively, leading ultimately to their downfall.

Diabolic Means Employed In Scams

In some West African countries like Nigeria and Ghana and some others, it has been rumoured that some of the people involved in these fraudulent activities now use diabolic means to make their victims succumb to the plot. And this may not just be the only explanation for the situations where highly intelligent and very careful people fall victim in the face of their extreme protection from scams.
Whether or not this is true has not been fully verified but there have been cases where symbols of ritual and sacrificed have been observed, but on the other hand, it may just reflect how sophisticated they have become in the act of cheating.

How To Avoid Being Duped

Here, I am going to talk about some useful measures on how to stay safe from online criminals. It is worthy of note that these may not confer total immunity against scammers but they will go a great extent to protect you and your property.

The first principle is You Cannot Be Duped If You Do Not Get Vulnerable.
Now the next question is how does one get vulnerable?
In trying to understand vulnerability, we must first recognize that greed on our part is the commonest cause of vulnerability amongst people that would later fall victim. Great offers come our way every day and we hardly turn our faces away from them. This in itself may just be a form of greed inherent in us as individuals.
Now the way to overcome is "to discipline yourself not to freak at every opportunity to become rich". Inasmuch as it is a great thing to harness profitable opportunities that come our way, we must have tested them out to prove them before accepting such offers.
Another thing to do is to ask them for some more time to think. Scammers can be patient, they can wait as long as you are going to give them what they want. However, they get really disturbed when you ask them for more time to think about the proposal. They get worried that in the course of thinking about the offer, you may go on to ask someone who may have had the same experience and will immediately discourage you. The logic behind this is that whereas in the first instance, you are only asking for more time to get them the money, in the second and protective instance, you show them that you are yet to accept the proposal.

The next approach would be to reduce vulnerability amongst the unmarried desperately searching for a partner. Everyone understands how difficult it can remain calm and patient when a lady is yet unmarried while she advances in age. We all do understand the need to have someone we can call our partner, and with whom we share our intimacy.
Counseling to young people who are ready for marriage but without a potential suitor showing up usually revolves around patience and endurance. However, it can really be difficult to do especially when the person involved is female. This is mainly because, in many parts of the world, females are expected to remain passive when it comes to marriage to allow the male to make the first advances.

Reasons Why People Engage In Scams

Like every other social vice, people who engage in these activities of cheating and fraud are commonly seen in poor and developing countries of the world. Due to the low standard of living and poverty, they are forced to venture into fraudulent activities. Their justification is that life is hard and there are no legit opportunities for livelihood.
In these places, the only available option seems to be fraudulent activities and other social vices, or at least, the only easy way out of their troubles. Unemployment is generally on the rise in these places, thus providing fertile soil for idleness and fraud.
Permit me to add that no reason is sufficient enough to cause you or anyone to venture into cheating others and cause them serious pain over their loss. Lives have been taken in some of these attempts many times and the perpetrators forget that it becomes a great source of pain to the victims.
I have had to lose all of my smartphones that I have ever used to theft. I mean all the smart mobile phones I have used this way and those periods without a mobile can be devastating no matter how short they may be coupled with the loss of valuable information that you can never retrieve.
This puts it that it is never justifiable to engage in fraudulent activities, armed robbery or any other such act all for the sake of livelihood.

Now, What Can You Do?

In the choice of adopting what to do, two factors must be considered:
  • The legitimacy, whether it is legally and morally acceptable or not.
  • Value creation, whether it adds value to you or others around you.

In view of the above two criteria, you can see that there are better alternatives. People just venture into things just because they want to make money or gain wealth and luxury. But there are actually legitimate ways to fulfil this purpose and alongside add value to the people around you. Some important areas include but not limited to;
  1. Software designing.
  2. Web programming.
  3. Affiliate marketing programs.
  4. Business agents.
  5. Project analysts.
  6. Account managers.
  7. Retailers and Wholesale.
I personally think there is a great potential in these people only that they have chosen to use it for the wrong purpose. It may not be as quick and fast-yielding as it may be when you cheat your way through but in the long run, it will be. You also create value for yourself and others around you because you have become more productive and your creativity is enhanced.
On the other hand, when you resort to deceiving people, your only skill is 'theft', and you should be awaiting punishment someday. But you are actually better suited to lead a different life through your many potentials. Therefore strive to be productive, creative and never agree to justify crime for any reason.

Here are Creative Things You Can Do in Nigeria and every other part of the world.

At this point, you see that not only peoples' money are at stake. Hearts are also at stake, with the potential outcome of causing a heartbreak when victims discover that they have loved a deceiver all along.
