What Is My Zodiac Sign, And Why You Stop Relying On Horoscopes

 Introduction

The Zodiac is an area of the sky that extends approximately 8° north or south (as measured in celestial latitude) of the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the celestial sphere over the course of the year. - Wikipedia

Zodiac has its origin from the hearts of ancient civilizations, but the point of debate remains if zodiac should be allowed to determine how one lives his life. Humans generally love every form of future forecasting, practices of clairvoyance and prophecy via any means. This has made horoscope/zodiac to remain dominant in the lives of many people today, even in the midst of contrary recommendations.

In other words, no matter how much ideologies are against the adoption of astrology in the governing of one's life, people will still believe in astrology and horoscope, based on the Zodiac signs for several reasons.

History of Astrology

The history of astrology has been traced to the ancient Babylonians. They found that studying astronomical objects in the sky and mapping the stars show some correlations with natural events. In time, they had drawn astrological charts which enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events. Thus, in the beginning, and for more than 2,000 years, astrology and astronomy were the same science.

Early in the 4th century B.C., Babylonian astrology was introduced to the Greeks through the studies of Plato, Aristotle, and other philosophers who were interested in the concept. It was then highly regarded as a science and was soon embraced by the Romans.

The Roman names for the Zodiacal signs are still being used till the present day. These names were then first adopted by the Arabs and later spread to the whole world.
While earliest astrology was used to make some sense out of order out of apparent chaos of objects in the sky outside us, it later became useful in the prediction of weather patterns, primarily for agricultural purposes. It was eventually broadened to include forecasts of natural disasters and war and other events in the course of human affairs. Because of the successes of astrology in these fields, it became widely used as counsel for kings and emperors and, now, for every one of us.

The Zodiac Signs - Origin

The Zodiac (which is derived from the Greek word meaning "circle of animals") is believed to have developed in ancient Egypt and later adopted by the Babylonians. Early astrologers knew it took twelve lunar cycles (i.e., months) for the sun to return to its original position. They then identified 12 constellations that they observed were linked to the progression of the seasons and assigned them names of certain animals and persons (in Babylonia, for example, the rainy season was found to occur when the Sun was in a particular constellation which was then named Aquarius, or water bearer).

The signs of the zodiac are subdivided into four groups:
  1. Fire Signs: Aries, Sagittarius, Leo
  2. Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  3. Air Signs: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
  4. Earth Signs: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
Each of these four groups is inscribed in its own quadrant, or group of "houses," on a circle. The division of the 12 houses is based on Earth's daily rotation and relates to such circumstances as relationships, finances, travel, etc. The division of the 12 signs of the zodiac, on the other hand, is based on the earth's year-long rotation around the Sun and relates to character traits and areas of life (e.g., Venus represents affection, Mercury represents speech and writing, etc.). Each planet is associated with two signs, and the Sun and Moon with one each.

Approximately 2000 B.C., Babylonian astrologers believed that the Sun, Moon, and the five planets known at that time (Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus) possessed distinct powers. Mars, for example, appeared to be red and was associated with aggression and war.

The Zodiac Signs

What is Your Zodiac Sign

The horoscope is a map of the Zodiacal circle with Earth at the centre. The top of the circle represents the Sun at its highest point during the day and left and right of that circle are the eastern and western horizons.

Your horoscope charts the relative positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars at a specific time and place of your choosing (e.g., the date, time and location of your birth). Astrologers don't use "clock time." Rather, they measure it as "sidereal" time, as measured from the sun's position at the spring equinox.

Once the date and time are selected and calculated as sidereal time and the location known and plotted, the astrologer consults an astronomical ephemeris (a table listing the locations of the Sun, Moon, planets, and constellations at any given time) to construct the chart.

Proper construction (now more easily done by a computer software program) and interpretation of the chart has been believed to reveal personality insights and current trends. These interpretations are to be kept safe and should only be entrusted to a highly trained and accredited astrologer.

Non-precisely, Zodiac based on the date and month of birth has been very commonly used worldwide with the following signs;
  • Capricorn - Dec 23 to Jan 21
  • Aquarius - Jan 22 to Feb 20
  • Pisces - Feb 21 to March 19
  • Aries - Mar 20 to Apr 20
  • Taurus - Apr 21 to May 21
  • Gemini - May 22 to Jun 22
  • Cancer - June 23 to Jul 22
  • Leo - Jul 23 to Aug 23
  • Virgo - Aug 23 to Sept 22
  • Libra - Sept 23 to Oct 22
  • Scorpio - Oct 23 to Nov 22
  • Sagittarius - Nov 23 to Dec 22
Even more precisely is the one that combines the signs above with those that relates to the time of birth, place of birth and circumstances of birth.

How Accurate Are Zodiac Signs?

Most people have confirmed that Zodiac signs are largely accurate in predicting some of their life's events including marriage, education and others. According to the American Federation of Astrologers, astrology has stayed this far, even when ancient civilizations that it started off with are long extinct because the art and science of astrology produce results. At least, so they claim and a few other people in their numbers have confirmed that too, but that does not make the practice infallible. It has it's limitations, its faults and shortcomings too.
We don't yet know why astrology and zodiac produce such accurate results ad they do, while some argue that it is based on some mystic powers of the universe, others believe it is the effect of the gravitational force in the world. The fact that it does not have a well established scientific explanation puts it up as one of the many spiritual and/or mythical arts as well.

However, no matter how accurate these results are, I still have many reasons why one should not believe them, or why no one should pattern their lives based in the zodiac charts, and that's what we will see in the later sections below.

Why You Should Never Live Your Life Reading Your Zodiac

  1. It makes your life seem determined by fate
  2. It may make you be indifferent about your ills
  3. You become so dependent on fortune-telling and clairvoyance
  4. It replaces work with luck
  5. The mindset of excellence is replaced by the mindset of limitations

It Makes Your Life Seem Determined by Fate

There are two philosophical schools of thought that have antagonised each other without yielding;
  1. Free will, and
  2. Determinism
Free will believes that every action or event that a person does or experiences is based on their own freedom of will. In other words, they choose to do it and that's why they did it.
However, determinism believed that everything someone does is a consequence of what has already being determined of them. That is to say, even your own will is not your own will per see. This latter school of thought have its positive effect of helping individual forgive every one of his/her errors, wrongs and negative events away as something that is beyond their own control - something already determined to happen. This belief negates the belief that your destiny is in your hands and makes one live his kife based on fate and mere luck. This in itself is a rather unfavourable, counter-productive and immature way of living.

It May Makes You be Indifferent About Your Ills

When your zodiac sign reveals that you are supposed to be proud and disrespectful, or that you are not likely to succeed or some other negativities, most people do not see anything wrong in accepting it that way. They claim that they cannot fight against what is already scripted in their life's journey. And thus, the stubborn, careless, nonchalant individual will continue to remain so because he or she accepts whatever the zodiac says about them, especially because it also says some great things about them too.

You Become So Dependent on Fortune-Telling and Clairvoyance

There are people that would actually go see an astrologer or fortune-teller for every decision they want to carry out. They want to marry, they see a prophet or soothe-sayer, they want to go for a job interview, they want to know the outcome before they go for the interview, and so on. But when you make your life so dependent on fortune-telling of clairvoyance, you totally take away the adventures from life itself and you create a limitation for yourself to try things that would otherwise have lifted you exceedingly.

It Replaces Work With Luck

There are so many things you can afford to replace in life, but work is not one of them. When you become very superstitious, you may begin to base your entire life on luck and superstition too. But I still don't know when luck does replace work. If you must succeed, it has to be a combination of working, persistence and patience, not a chance. In the words of Louis Pasteureven chance favours the prepared mind.

The Mindset of Excellence is Replaced by the Mindset of Limitations

When you already believe that your limitations are normal, you do not rise above them. Believing in some negative things said about you will make you not to work your way to rise above them. That is the mindset of excellence. There are also some positive things your Zodiac would say about you. Well, that has the advantage of spurring you to develop those good sides as well, but irrespective of all that, the mindset of excellence strives to be better.

Conclusion

Astrology is an ancient art that has taken root in the lives and actions of many people today. It uses the position of the sun and stars at certain times to predict the events that happen in a person's life. It also foretells a persons personality traits, luck and fortune-telling. However, as we have seen in this post, the reasons support why one should not live one's life simply based on what zodiac, astrology or horoscope, as it may be called, says about one's life.
