There are times when one gets caught in a job they do not find interesting and enjoyable. You are thinking of resigning but simultaneously thinking about the bills you have to pay. How will you afford to pay if you quit your job?

Interestingly, you don’t have to quit your job for any reason. You can turn things around and make it more interesting and enjoyable through these tips I am going to show you.

Some years back, I stumbled across a book by Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen, titled “Fish!”. Yes, that was the title and it was about a group of people selling fish in an enjoyable way.

Going through this book, I realized that it is sometimes not about changing jobs. You don’t always get the jobs you want, remember. It is about developing an attitude and behaviour that makes your job enjoyable and interesting.

In this article, you will see amazing ways to make your job more interesting and enjoyable.

Possible reasons why your job is uninteresting

Here are some of the reasons why you may find your job uninteresting and unenjoyable.

  1. Your job is too stressful and the pay is not commensurate.
  2. You do not have passion for it but you don’t have a choice.
  3. Your colleagues are always a pain in the ass.
  4. It does not stimulate you to grow.
  5. It is not exactly what you want to do.

Someone once said, “You don’t always have to do what you love but you have to love what you do”. Superficially, this statement seems dismissive of the need to pursue your passions but on a critical look, you find out that it is all about finding happiness.

Happiness increases your productivity and gives you more satisfaction with your life. This satisfaction is what would sustain you until you find what you truly love. I will also like to note that you can love anything you choose to love.

Ways to make your job more interesting and enjoyable

Some of these tips on how to make your job more enjoyable and interesting are gotten from Stephen Lundin’s book. I hope they help you stay happy and more productive at work.

1. Choose your attitude

Have I already said that you can determine how you feel at work? You can decide whether to have a positive attitude or not, and it’s totally up to you.

Many people allow the disappointment of not being where they wish to be, or not earning what they wanted to earn, to get to them and make them behave pessimistically in the workplace. But as Lundin, et al demonstrated in their book, you can choose your attitude irrespective of the kind of job you do.

2. Play while you work

Work becomes boring and uninteresting when you don’t have fun while you work. Your employers would tell you to maintain strict work ethics and not mix work with pleasure but the truth is, you are going to get easily burnt out if you don’t have fun while you work.

The fish sellers in Lundin’s book played with their franchises and entertained their customers in the process. This not only makes them happier but also makes their customers happy too.

You don’t necessarily have to go to the amusement park to play while you work. Simple playfulness with your close colleagues can lighten the day for everyone. And of course, it doesn’t have to last for three hours.

3. Make your customers’ day

When it comes to workplace and customer satisfaction, they both work hand in hand. Making your customers’ day indirectly makes your day too. This is because your happy customers might do something to make you happy too, and even if they don’t, the smile on their faces might be all you may need.

When you make your customers’ say, they make yours too and that makes you find your job more interesting and enjoyable throughout that day. It also makes them stick more with your brand and business.

4. Be present

What if I tell you there is no point going to work if your mind is not going to be present too? You can be physically present in a place and your mind is not there. This makes you easily bored and frustrated at where you currently are.

No matter where else you want to be at the moment, you must deliberately and consciously bring your mind to where you are currently. It is only wise to do so because you cannot achieve any results outside of where you are at the moment.

Being present makes you enjoy the moment, as well as give your best attention to what your present job is. This enhances workplace productivity, interactions, and satisfaction for you and everyone.

5. Rest when you have to

Whether it is a 9-5 job or not, nobody expects you to stay productive throughout the entire time. There is a reason why every job has a period for a break, it could be a lunch break, nap hours, or whatever name they may call it.

Failure to take adequate rest when you are tired will make you feel exhausted and stressed. Remember, stress is one common reason why your job might suddenly start feeling less interesting and boring. Thus, a great way to make your job enjoyable at all times is to cultivate the habit of getting rest when you need to.

6. Avoid staying hungry

Within a few hours (4 to 5 hours), your breakfast would have been used up. And when hunger sets in, it comes with the unpleasant effects of hypoglycemia.

Hunger makes one lose attention and concentration. One also becomes irritable. There might be fatigue, headache, or palpitations. All of these are not great experiences to have in your workplace. They can make your time at work less enjoyable.

To overcome that, go to lunch when you get very hungry. Alternatively, you can take food along from home as long as you can preserve it at work, either with a food flask or a refrigerator and microwave.

Benefits of having an interesting time at work

Making your work more enjoyable and interesting for you goes a long way to benefit both you and other people at your workplace. Here are some benefits of making the time at your job more interesting and enjoyable.

  1. You get more productive.
  2. It cheers other people around up.
  3. Customers like to deal with you.
  4. It benefits your mental health because you keep a free mind.

Final words

Making your job more interesting and enjoyable is important for your overall satisfaction and well-being at your workplace. You don’t have to in your dream job to stay happy.

If you allow anything to steal your joy, it can affect all other areas of your life and productivity. This is because your happiness is a key force to your success, health, and vitality.

You may not be where you desire to be but you are on your way there. Instead of becoming negative as a result of the current state of things, you can choose to remain happy. These tips would help you make your job more interesting and enjoyable to you no matter what you think about what you currently do.
