Government job search in Canada. What vacancies can Canadian immigrants expect in 2022? Canada – it is home to more than thirty-five million people – is one of the largest countries in size after Russia, and is considered one of the richest in the world. Working in Canada is a dream for many emigrants. The country occupies one of the leading places in attracting foreign labor resources.

The number of jobs in the Canadian government alone is a compelling reason for many to put the federal government at the top of their job search list. In addition, Government Jobs for Canadian immigrants are not limited to clerical or clerical positions but cover almost as many positions and occupations as are available in the private sector.

Given the huge range of jobs – more than any other sector – let’s take a look at the main categories that CA government jobs fall into. Exploring these will provide a deeper insight into the Canadian government job sector and provide a clear view of the vast opportunities available. They include:

Engineering Jobs

Government Jobs for Canadian immigrants include engineering jobs in many government organizations. These cover mostly all areas of engineering but are divided by the department to meet the engineering needs of each.

Examples of positions and departments that require engineering professionals include:

  • Electrical Systems Engineer
  • Electronic Engineer
  • Engineering Technologist
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Operational Engineer
  • Power Engineer
  • Aerospace Engineer
  • Civil Engineer

Civilian Jobs with the Canadian Department of National Defence

The Department of Defense is the largest employer in the Government of Canada. Of course, they recruit and employ members of the armed forces (who are not included here), but they are also the main employers of civilians.

The Department of National Defense (DND) offers positions in almost every major employment category;

Examples include:

  • Painter
  • Plumber
  • Precision Tool and Die Maker
  • Electrician
  • Heating, Power, and Stationary Plant Operator
  • HVAC Technician

Canada’s Department of National Defense (DND) is the country’s largest federal employer. DND has the largest number of employees and personnel, both military and civilian, and maintains the department’s largest budget.

Law Enforcement Jobs

The most renowned employer of law enforcement personnel in Canada is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police also known as RCMP.

It is a national police force, but it also operates at the local level, being contracted to provide police services at the municipal level in most provinces and territories with the exceptions are Ontario and Quebec – but the RCMP provides primary federal law enforcement and thus has a presence in those provinces as well.) The RCMP performs all the regular and expected duties of a police officer, including patrols, investigations, peace – compliance with, and respect for the law.

The RCMP has launched an initiative to dispel some of the myths surrounding employment with the organization. The department wants prospective officers to know that it is hiring and expects to fill positions that will replace about 1,700 employees annually over the next few years.

With a starting salary after initial cadet training of $50,674 and increasing within the first 36 months of employment to over $82,108, and only a high school diploma required to apply, the RCMP is the leading option for people interested in working in public law enforcement in Canada. Keep in mind that a degree in criminology will increase your chances of selection.

In addition to regular constable positions with the RCMP, police positions are available in provinces (such as the Ontario Provincial Police) and municipalities (such as the Vancouver Police Department) where the RCMP does not have a contract. However, police work is not limited to clerical work.

The RCMP, Canadian Correctional Service, DND, and other organizations also have openings for law enforcement professionals, as well as civilian and support positions.

Some examples of law enforcement and/or support positions offered include:

  • Health Services Officer
  • Jailer
  • Logistics Officer
  • Administrator
  • Claims Analyst
  • Detachment Clerks

In addition, the RCMP employs a number of professionals and experts in a surprising array of fields to support its analytical and investigative capabilities.

On their website, they advertise jobs such as:

  • Electronic Technologist
  • Engineer
  • Entomologist
  • Firearms Technologist
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologist
  • Operations and Communications Specialist
  • Strategic Service Consultant
  • Toxicologist
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
  • Avionics Technician
  • Counterfeit Analyst
  • Document Examiner

These are all jobs advertised by the RCMP as public and civilian jobs.

In addition, there are many jobs available in the closely related field of correctional services, including:

  • Nurse
  • Program Officer
  • Social Service Worker
  • Correctional Officer
  • Doctor

Correctional Service Canada is a leading employer offering a range of entry-level, skilled, and professional positions. Given the variety of organizations and the variety of jobs within each, law enforcement and policing is a field that offers a wealth of opportunities for workers and professionals in a variety of professions.

Healthcare Jobs

Healthcare is one of the leading employment areas in the public sector. The Canadian government hires people in the healthcare field for almost all types of medical and healthcare jobs.

Canadian government health jobs are available at the federal, provincial, territorial, and regional levels, offering a variety of careers and employment close to home.

The government offers many types of healthcare jobs. These range from clerical and billing specialists to professional positions for doctors, nurses, and administrative staff.

Some examples of healthcare positions available at the federal and/or local provincial level include:

  • Medical Adjudicator
  • Medical Evaluator
  • Mental Health professionals
  • Ministry of Health Administrator
  • Nurse
  • Nursing in First Nations communities
  • Occupational Health Specialist
  • Claims Manager
  • Compliance Officer
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Dental Technician
  • Dentist
  • District Medical and Nursing Officer
  • Doctor
  • Pharmacist
  • Physical Activity Specialist
  • Policy Officer
  • Public Health Nurse
  • Research and Policy Analyst
  • Toxicologists

Skilled Labour and Trades Jobs

Government Jobs for Canadian immigrants are by no means limited to professionals and graduates. The government is the best employer for people working in trades and skilled labor jobs.

Such attitudes are very different and are again present in practically all organizations.

The following list is by no means exhaustive but is a fair representation of the variety of work available to people in the trades and professions.

  • Machinery Operator
  • Machinist
  • Maintenance Worker
  • Material Handler
  • Automotive Mechanic
  • Building Inspector
  • Carpenter
  • Cleaner
  • Construction Labourer
  • Cook
  • Driver
  • Electrician
  • Firefighter
  • Food Inspector
  • Heavy Duty Cleaners
  • Heavy Duty Equipment Operator
  • Housekeeper
  • Occupational Safety Officer
  • Pipe Fitter
  • Plumber

There are virtually unlimited opportunities for qualified career professionals. The Government of Canada should be the best option for anyone looking for a trade, skilled workforce, or an entry-level position in any service-oriented profession for superior pay and benefits and diverse employment opportunities.

    3. Human Resources Professionals and Recruitment Officers
Companies grow and, as such, there is a relative increase in the demand for suitable people for these vacancies. Recruitment and HR professionals play a critical role in recruiting candidates to fill the immense demand for jobs in Canada. In professional fields like engineering and technology, the demand for recruiters is even higher.

A recruiter can improve their career chances in Canada by registering as a professional recruiter, as well as being a member of the Association of Professional Recruiters of Canada (APRC). Additionally, for some employment opportunities, certification as a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) may be required.
