Ever wondered why your belly fat just won’t go, no matter how many teas or pills you have tried? As a doctor, I’ve seen firsthand how misinformation about weight loss misleads people into unhealthy routines that produce no significant effects. Numerous products and methods have been suggested by individuals who have no information to verify their safety and effectiveness.

After writing on how to lose face fat, a reader asked me to also write on how to lose belly fat. And for good reason, this topic is loaded with hype, scams, and half-truths. I’m sure you have seen weight loss ads and commercials that promise to give users a flat tummy overnight or within a few months of consistency. But the truth is, after using these products, you realize that you have spent so much money without any visible effects, plus you aren’t sure if the products caused your body system more damage or not.

In addition to my prior knowledge about the causes of weight loss and weight gain, I have researched why those slimming teas, flat tummy pills, and detox pills won’t help you lose belly fat and what you can do instead. So, if this is what you are looking for, here are science-backed tips that will help you lose belly fat and unhealthy weight to stay fit and healthy.

But just before then, let’s see the causes of belly fat and what it means to your health.

What Causes Belly Fat?

When talking about causes of face fat, I mentioned the impact of genetics, hormones, and habits on its development. These factors also play a significant role in the development and progression of belly fat.

Fat is naturally deposited under the skin, a layer of fat referred to as subcutaneous fat. This helps the body in thermal insulation (or provision of warmth), as well as an alternate source of energy when necessary. However, in the abdomen, a second layer of fat called visceral fat lies below the subcutaneous layer and lines the intra-abdominal cavity. These fat layers both contribute to belly fat in humans.

Among the most important causes of belly fat are lifestyle factors like poor dietary choices, a sedentary lifestyle, and hormonal changes (including pregnancy). Such that one of these is always implicated when someone has excessive belly fat. Genetics also plays a vital role in overall weight gain and the development of belly fat.

In the absence of diseases like Cushing’s syndrome or hypothyroidism, the development and progression of belly fat is due, primarily, to an imbalance between calorie intake and expenditure. A sedentary lifestyle describes a higher caloric intake than expenditure, leading to excess fat storage. That is why people who are less physically active tend to gain more weight and belly fat than those who are more active.

Lastly, on the impact of genetics, inherited genes may affect the expression of the enzymes required for energy metabolism and appetite. Some people may naturally be hypermetabolic and not gain weight, no matter how much and what they eat.[1]Ganetzky RD, Markhard AL, Yee I, Clever S, Cahill A, Shah H, Grabarek Z, To TL, Mootha VK. Congenital Hypermetabolism and Uncoupled Oxidative Phosphorylation. How Belly Fat Determines Your State of Health

Belly fat is a strong indicator of general well-being. The relative amount of belly fat can also be a pointer to certain metabolic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and arteriosclerosis. This makes losing belly fat something one should not gloss over.

In addition to the aesthetics of having a flat tummy, losing excess belly fat can protect you from developing potentially life-threatening diseases in the future.

Studies have shown that people with an apple-shaped body (central adiposity) are significantly more at risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome than those with a pear-shaped body type (peripheral adiposity), regardless of the body mass index (BMI). Thus, reflecting the strong link between belly fat and health.[3]Dale CE, Fatemifar G, et al., Causal Associations of Adiposity and Body Fat Distribution With Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke Subtypes, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Mendelian Randomization … Continue reading[4]Jingyuan Fu, Marten Hofker, Cisca Wijmenga. Did You Know?
  • Waist circumference over 37 inches (94cm) in men and 31.5 inches (80cm) in women carries an increased risk.
  • Waist circumference over 40 inches (101cm) in men and 35 inches (88cm) in women carries a substantially increased risk.
  • A healthy waist-to-hip ratio (ratio of circumference just above your navel to the widest part of your hip) is less than 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women.
  • BMI (Body Mass Index) is no longer considered an accurate measure of a person’s overall health.

7 Effective Ways to Lose Belly Fat Safely

Having seen that the development of excessive belly fat is a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors, tackling this challenge, thus, requires addressing the factors that you can modify. You can’t alter your genetics and how they affect your basal metabolism and appetite, but you can largely control your dietary intake and level of physical activity.

The truth is, I have seen real weight transformations, and you can achieve the same through consistency and dedication. Here are 7 trusted ways to lose belly fat with no untoward effects or consequences.

Too long, didn't read

Exercise regularlyBurn more calories and boost metabolism.
Eat fewer carbs – This helps your body burn stored fat.
Cut down on processed foods – They are high in calories and low in nutrients.
Stay active – Avoid sitting for long hours; move more daily.
Get enough sleep – Poor sleep can slow fat loss and increase hunger.
Drink water often – It boosts fat metabolism and helps control hunger.
Skip the miracle pills – Focus on healthy lifestyle habits instead.

1. Regular exercise

Whether or not you are genetically predisposed to excessive belly fat, the general principle of weight loss is to lose more calories than you gain. Regular exercise is a great way to increase your calorie metabolism to maintain an optimal or calorie-deficient state.

Specialized physical activity primarily involves engaging several muscle groups, a process that increases energy generation and consumption by the body. Muscle groups also increase in mass when you constantly engage them through physical exercise. This also increases your basal energy requirement as larger muscles and muscle cells require more energy than smaller cells.

Of note, abdominal exercises like planks, bicycle crunches, and Russian twists engage the core abdominal muscles, but they do not directly cause loss of belly fat as most people believe. Rather, they strengthen and develop your abdominal muscles, ‘abs’, without necessarily causing loss of belly fat. This is because fat burning in the body requires a metabolic process of oxidation or breakdown to produce energy.

The hack is in focusing on increasing your daily energy expenditure to levels where your body can fall back to fat metabolism for alternate energy, which brings us to the next point.

Takeaway
Larger muscles use more calories even when you are at rest.

2. Reduce carbs to boost fat burning

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source of the body. They are broken down into glucose, which the body readily metabolizes to release energy. However, consuming too many carbs when struggling with abdominal fat means your body would always have enough or an excess of carbohydrates without having any need to fall back on fat metabolism.

Cut back on carbs, particularly when you are not very physically active. Avoid too frequent sugary beverages or limit your sugar intake to less than once a day and not every day. When carbs are limited, your body seamlessly falls back on fats for energy, leading to their consumption and loss of body fat, including belly fat.

3. Avoid or reduce processed foods

Many processed foods are lower in fiber, higher in calories, and contain unhealthy fats, sugars, and salt. The lower fiber content in these foods decreases the time they take to move through the gastrointestinal tract, meaning they will be absorbed quickly, and you will get hungry faster.

Having to eat such high-calorie food several times a day would lead to a state of excess calorie reserve, especially if you are not very physically active. This reduces your body’s need to metabolize fats, thus predisposing to excess fat storage in areas like the abdomen, thighs, skin, face, etc.

In addition, processed foods lack nutritional value because the processing destroys a bulk of the nutrients. Such foods are only enhanced by artificial sweeteners, additives, and preservatives, which may also be detrimental to health when consumed in high quantities regularly.

4. Be less sedentary

A sedentary lifestyle can neutralize your efforts to lose belly fat or general weight. This is because being sedentary reduces your body’s energy needs, which might mean that your calorie intake is higher than your expenditure.

Think of it this way: say you consume 10kCal of energy per meal, but because you are sedentary, you only get to expend 2kCal before eating another meal. This creates a state of metabolic excess where fats are stored instead of being metabolized.

Being less sedentary or more physically active can help you utilize the calories you consume and even leave room for the metabolism of stored fats for an alternate energy source. Typical examples of this kind of lifestyle include avoiding a sleep-eat-sleep-eat lifestyle, daily walking, exercise, etc.

5. Adequate sleep

Getting adequate but not too much sleep can help in weight loss through the following mechanisms. Inadequate sleep alters the appetite hormones, predisposing to late-night snacking, over-eating, a study shows.[5]How to Lose Face Fat: Doctor-Approved Tips – Knowseeker.com

Lack of adequate sleep can also undermine your weight loss efforts. A study found that approximately 1 hour of sleep restriction in five nights a week led to less fat loss in individuals undergoing a hypocaloric (low-calorie) diet, despite similar weight loss. In other words, your body might lose muscle or water instead of fat if you are not sleeping enough while dieting.[6]Xuewen Wang, Joshua R Sparks, Kimberly P Bowyer, Shawn D Youngstedt. Influence of sleep restriction on weight loss outcomes associated with caloric restriction. Sleep. Volume 41, Issue 5. May 2018. … Continue reading

Thus, getting adequate sleep can help lose belly and body fat in general.

6. Drink water regularly

Adequate hydration is important for weight loss because water is essential for all metabolic reactions in the body. Drinking water always even when you have not eaten, can help your body efficiently carry on with metabolic processes in low-calorie conditions.

Inadequate water intake slows down metabolic reactions in the body, including fat-burning processes. Instead of normal fat-burning reactions occurring, the body might favor reactions that produce harmful byproducts of poor metabolism, leading to cellular stress. This, in turn, stimulates appetite, leading to more caloric intake without allowing the body enough time to metabolize fats.

Also, water can temporarily give you a feeling a satiety when you are hungry. This gives your body sufficient time to burn stored fat before you eat again.

This gives your body more time to burn stored fat before you eat again.”

7. Rely less on weight loss drugs and supplements

Weight loss drugs and supplements generally promise you unrealistic effects. Some marketers would even tell you that you no longer need to watch your diet or engage in regular exercise when you are on these medications and pills. But this is far from the truth.

Many of these weight loss drugs are mineral and vitamin supplements that are essential for metabolism. However, getting these extra nutrients does not mean the body will automatically default to a state of higher metabolism. The principle of ‘garbage-in-garbage-out’ also applies: You must watch your intake against your expenditure.

After spending huge amounts of money on weight loss medications, you may have this feeling that you don’t need to do anything else to lose belly fat and body weight in general. And again, this is not true. While some may be helpful, instead of relying on those ‘magical’ weight loss pills, lifestyle modifications, exercise, and dieting, etc., have been shown to be more effective.

Losing belly fat is about consistency and dedication to the tips discussed above. Not only will you see better results in the long run, but you also avoid any risk of taking unsafe medications while saving your money in the process.

The Importance of Calorie Consciousness

Calorie consciousness is an idea I have seen many people practice, including myself. It involves mentally keeping track of your daily energy intake and expenditure. While some people simply eat everything they see without being mindful, calorie consciousness makes you think back if you have done enough activity to fully expend the calories you got from your previous meals that day.

I sometimes have to do more workouts in the evening when I figure out that I had been eating so much while being physically inactive or sedentary. This idea of calorie consciousness can make your efforts in losing belly fat fruitful and productive. In addition, it helps you maintain healthier dietary habits, especially in terms of what you should or shouldn’t eat.

Science Behind Why Belly Exercises Won’t Help

In the section for exercises, I already discussed the reason why doing abs exercises won’t directly help you lose belly fat. But in case you may have missed it, here is why targeted belly exercises won’t primarily cause loss of belly fat.

Contrary to what many people think, doing targeted exercises will not result in fat loss only in that area you are targeting. This is because physical exercise involves rapid sequential movements of the muscles around the part of your body you are working on. This results in the breakdown of carbohydrates by the muscle cells to generate energy, producing lactic acid in the process. Lactic acid build-up is why you feel that burning sensation in your muscles immediately after an intense workout.

Belly exercises typically increase the muscle power, fiber sizes, and overall muscle mass, but not the surrounding fats directly. However, when calories get depleted, the body falls back on fat for energy generation, beginning with the most metabolically active fats.

Did You Know?
  • Not all fat is the same – Some fats are more metabolically active than others.
  • Brown fats or brown adipose tissue (BAT) are the most metabolically active fats.
  • The major distribution of brown fats include perivascular (around blood vessels of the heart and chest), periviscus (around organs of the chest cavity – lungs and heart, intestines, abdominal organs, and the vertebrae), and subcutaneous brown fat (between the anterior neck muscles, jugular, under the clavicle, armpits, under the skin of the abdomen, and inguinal fossae).
  • Metabolically active fats are the first to be metabolized
