It’s true that a lot of people, especially ladies, think that male doctors are the most promiscuous men on the planet. As a medical doctor, I have also come across female colleagues who believe the same. In my opinion, these assumptions may not be so far from the truth but how factual is they?
While discharging my duty as a young practitioner, I have experienced this stereotype myself. This made me realize how unfair this generalization could be.
I once overhead an elderly nurse “jokingly” tell a two younger nurses to stay away from me and my likes. In the end, I don’t really take such comments seriously because she could just be speaking from her personal experience.
At the end of the day, we all go our separate ways without any sufficient time for extra-curricular meets and greets.
However, the more I hear people say that doctors are promiscuous (referring to male doctors), the more something kicks in my logical mind. Is it a fact or just a stereotype? This makes me seek evidence regarding this argument, especially because I have seen both promiscuous and faithful male doctors in varying proportions.
I also question, is there any significant difference in promiscuity among male doctors versus men in other professions? Not only does these questions pique my curiosity, but they also offer some hope that male doctors could get some justice from these societal stereotypes against them.
Without jumping into any conclusions, what does the facts say? But first, let’s define what promiscuity is and what it is not.
What is Promiscuity
Before we answer the question of whether doctors are promiscuous or not, let’s briefly define promiscuity within the contexts of sexual relations.
According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, promiscuity in the context of this post, refers to having or involving many sexual partners, i.e, not restricted to one sexual partner or a few sexual partners. It is the act of having multiple sexual partners.
A doctor is said to be promiscuous when there is evidence that he is having casual sexual affairs with several women whether he is married or single. Without this, he cannot be said to be promiscuous. Flirting and friendliness with ladies at the workplace does not count as promiscuity.
Statistics of Male Infidelity & Promiscuity
Promiscuity often goes with infidelity but infidelity is used in the context of being in an established relationship. Thus, in looking at promiscuity among male doctors, it will be helpful to compare what the statistics say on infidelity among men in general versus men in the medical profession.
In one survey, 75% of men admitted to cheating in some way at some point in a relationship; 25% of married men admitted to having had at least one extra-marital affair, while 15% of married women admitted to doing the same.1Wiederman, M. W., & Hurd, C. (1999). Extradyadic Involvement during Dating. Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 16(2), 265-274. https://doi.org/10.1177/0265407599162008
In another study, 74% of men and 68% of women admitted they could cheat in a relationship if they knew they would never be caught. About 57% of men and 54% of women admitted committing infidelity in a previous relationship.2Infidelity: The Cold Hard Truth About Cheating – LAIntelligence
In support of the popular belief, the statistics show that infidelity rates, and by extension promiscuity rates, are marginally higher in males than females. But how do we compare this to medical doctors?
A recent study on infidelity rates among medical doctors and nurses showed that 21% of all the respondents either have or have been involved in an unfaithful relationship. Among these, the majority were doctors, and men were 4.3 times more unfaithful than women. In addition, medical workers who worked nighttime emergencies were more likely (60%) to be unfaithful and promiscuous than those who only worked during the day, while part-time workers had the lowest infidelity rates (9.3%).3Guerrero S, Castro-Luna G, Zapata Boluda R, Freites A, García R, Parrón-Carreño T. Incidence and Related Factors of Infidelity among Medical Doctors and Nurses. Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2021 May 23;18(11):5575. doi: 10.3390/ijerph18115575. PMID: 34071091; PMCID: PMC8197082.
A similar survey of casual affairs among different professionals showed that 51% of attorneys reported having being involved in an office romance, 75% of energy sector employees have gotten frisky with a co-worker, and the list goes on.4Love and Law: 51% of Lawyers Polled Have Had an Office Affair – Career Advice, Vault.com
Doesn’t the above show that medical doctors may not be more promiscuous than men in other professions? So, why it the claim about promiscuity louder for medical doctors?
Let’s answer that in the next section.
Why Medical Doctors Are Seen to be More Promiscuous
The above studies does not prove that male medical doctors are more promiscuous than other men but there are several reasons why people might think so.
Following the discussions from the above studies, here are some possible reasons why male doctors might be seen as being too promiscuous.
1. Higher Standards
The society has a higher standard for doctors because the profession is classified as noble and highly respectable. Doctors are also expected to be more knowledgeable about the dangers of having multiple casual sexual partners. These higher standards/expectations that society has for medical doctors can explain why they view them as been too promiscuous even if they may be less or just equally promiscuous as other men.
2. Being Naturally Loved
Maybe not anymore, but doctors used to be naturally loved by a lot of people, including ladies. This might be because of the perception of status, financial security, and the knowledgeable capabilities of male doctor.
This meant that husbands and other people had to be more suspicious of every doctor who came close to a woman or their wife, even if for harmless reasons. That suspicion could easily materialize if a doctor acted in the slightest way in support of it. Thus, even very few cases could be generalized to mean that male doctors are too promiscuous, compared to other men.
3. Being Easily Believed
Doctors are easily taken at their word as though they cannot lie. Indeed, honesty is one of the important qualities they inculcate during their training. But they do their best to uphold honesty in the practice of medicine, this does not mean that they cannot make a trivial joke outside patient care.
For example, a doctor jokingly saying flirtatious words to a lady might be received as a serious interest in an affair with her. And recognizing that the doctor might have the needed resources to make her succumb, people might assume that the doctor must have had several affairs with such ladies, even if he never thought of anything else happening afterwards.
4. Expressiveness
Most experienced doctors are verbally expressive because they have learned to interact with different categories of people. Just like the explanation for the previous point, people might translate this expressiveness to mean easy access to woman and a higher likelihood of promiscuity.
5. Higher Women Expectancy
Similar to the idea on higher standards/expectations and being naturally loved, many ladies who love to marry a doctor might expect serious commitment from a casual relationship. And when things don’t go as expected, she might feel seriously betrayed to the extent that she can effortlessly spread defamation claims against the doctor.
One popular example of this happened some years ago when a lady took to the internet to drag a case involving this kind of betrayal to unprecedented levels. This demonstrates why it’s often louder with medical doctors.
Are Doctors Promiscuous?
To answer the question, “Are doctors promiscuous?“, we have sufficient facts to show that doctors can be promiscuous just like other people. Factors such as extreme stress and a desire to relieve the stress, occasional deprivation of quality time with wife and family, as well as working night shifts, can possibly increase a medical doctor’s chances of promiscuity.
However, not all doctors are promiscuous, and there is insufficient evidence to support that doctors are more promiscuous than men in other professions.
Generalizing a claim to every member of class of people from very few members f the group is considered a fallacy. Thus, until you have been able to establish that a majority of male medical doctors are promiscuous, you cannot say that doctors are promiscuous.
Suffice to say that some doctors are faithful to their sexual partners, whether married or not, and some others are promiscuous. And if you decide to compare male doctors to men in other professions, doctors may even be less promiscuous.
So, it might be time to change the stereotype from “Doctors are promiscuous” to “Some doctors are promiscuous“. But even if that happens, there will always be reasons why people will still see doctors are being promiscuous or more promiscuous than other people, as discussed previously.
Are Female Medical Doctors Also Promiscuous?
For some reasons, when promiscuity is being discussed about medical doctors, the radar points more towards the male medical doctors rather than their female counterparts. Perhaps it because men are generally the subject of such discussions universally.
But let’s take a step back to ask about female medical doctors. Are they also promiscuous?
From the statistics and experience as a medical doctor, female medical doctors are less promiscuous than their male counterparts. They are more faithful in relationships and marriage. Only a small proportion of female medical doctors may consider such activities—a proportion small enough to conclude that female medical doctors are not promiscuous.
Also, female medical doctors get married faster than their male colleagues, further reducing their chances of promiscuity. This is because women are generally more faithful in relationships and marriage than men.
Final words
To generalize that medical doctors are promiscuous could be considered an error of over-generalization. There may not be a significant difference in promiscuity among male doctors versus what you find among men of other professions.
While there are factors that may predispose medical doctors and other health workers to promiscuity, there are also other work-related factors that might make them less promiscuous than other men.
